New Democracy was formed in 1974 as a center-right party. It was the follower of the Radical National Union, which had been founded by Constantin Caramanlis before the Colonels' junta. ND won the first legislative elections after the restoration of the democracy in November 1974.

After the parliamentary elections held on 7 March 2004, TV reports showing the supporters of New Democracy celebrating their party's victory, as well as the press reports which included the photos, were showing numerous flags of the party, on which the light blue field had a very light shade and the party logo was placed on a horizontal white oval instead of a disc. The oval had an inner blue and an outer white fimbriation.

One of the most frequent variants was the one with the dark blue inner fimbriation.

Another variant of the same flag, which seems to have been less used, was charged with the party name, inscribed in white along the bottom edge.

Another one, the least numerous of them, had an additional small white oval, charged with the party logo, in the canton; this oval had no fimbriations.

Another very frequent variant, which might have actually been the most frequent one, has had the inner fimbriation of the white oval in light blue colour.

Just like the flags with inner fimbriation in dark blue, these flags were sometimes charged with the party name, inscribed in white along the bottom edge, or even less frequently, with the additional small white oval, charged with the party logo, in the canton.Flag variant - Image by Tomislav Todorović & Thanos Tzikis, 12 September 2008
In TV reports showing the supporters of New Democracy celebrating their party's winning of the parliamentary elections held on 7 March 2004, several flags could have been seen which had designs completely different from the most of others. One of them was a dark blue-white-light blue vertical triband, with the party logo in centre of the white field

The other one was charged with large party logo and party name, inscribed beneath it in dark blue, and a dark blue horizontal line between them, all on white field.
